When the game started in 1957, there were just three countries that participated in the games, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Sudan.

South Africa was expected to be part of the teams that contested that year, but due to the apartheid regime, it failed to approve a multi-racial team, and they were left out of the tournament.

Sarcastically South Africa who was disqualified to participate in the maiden edition of the games in 1956, became the host 36 years later and won the cup for the first time in their home soil.

Nigeria was supposed to participate in 1996, but withdrew, due to security reasons. The game expanded from 16 teams to 24 and was moved from January to June.
